Great event branding does more than make an impression. It creates a sense of belonging, builds excitement, and gives an unforgettable experience a visual identity that lives on long after the event ends.
Since its inception in 2024, Sabra Creative has had the privilege of partnering with the Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH) to develop and evolve the branding and event materials for its annual NEXUS in Medicine Conference.
Now in its third year, NEXUS has become a highly anticipated, consistently sold-out gathering celebrating, supporting, and empowering Black women in medicine. For Sabra, it’s an opportunity to do what we love most: use thoughtful, strategic design to amplify a mission that matters.
NEXUS stands for Nurturing, EXcelling, and Unifying Sisters in Medicine, and its mission is every bit as powerful as its name.
Created by ABGH, NEXUS brings together Black women physicians, healthcare professionals, researchers, and trainees from across the country to address barriers to career advancement, promote health equity, cultivate leadership, and build a lasting community of support.
Black women remain significantly underrepresented in medicine and continue to face systemic obstacles that can affect professional advancement, leadership opportunities, and workplace experiences.
NEXUS creates an intentional space to confront those challenges while celebrating the extraordinary contributions of Black women in healthcare.
Through inspiring keynote presentations, professional development workshops, mentorship opportunities, wellness activities, and meaningful networking experiences, the conference offers something that extends far beyond traditional professional education: a community where Black women in medicine can feel seen, celebrated, and empowered.
The response has been remarkable. Since its inaugural conference in 2024, NEXUS has sold out every year, reflecting the tremendous demand for this kind of transformative experience.
As one attendee from the inaugural conference shared:
“I feel poured into, supported, loved and reminded of my excellence as a Black woman. Everything about this conference was truly excellent.”
— NEXUS 2024 Attendee
For our team at Sabra Creative, contributing to an experience that inspires this kind of response is especially meaningful.
When ABGH launched NEXUS in 2024, our goal was to establish a recognizable visual identity that would capture the conference’s energy, professionalism, and purpose.
But designing for an annual conference presents an interesting creative challenge: How do you keep a brand fresh and exciting year after year without losing the recognition you’ve worked to build?
Our approach has been to balance consistency with creative evolution.
Rather than reinventing the NEXUS brand for every conference, we’ve maintained its foundational identity while introducing thoughtful refinements to the visual style, graphic treatments, compositions, and layouts.
This allows each year’s conference to have its own distinct personality while remaining unmistakably NEXUS.
It’s a strategy that builds brand equity over time. Returning attendees encounter something familiar yet exciting, while first-time participants are introduced to a cohesive, established conference experience.
The inaugural NEXUS Conference marked the beginning of both an important new initiative for ABGH and a new visual brand.
Our creative work established the foundation for the conference’s identity, creating a cohesive design direction that could be applied across its event materials.
The priority was to create a brand that felt confident, inspiring, and welcoming while providing the flexibility needed to support a wide variety of conference communications.
With a successful inaugural conference behind us, the second year presented an opportunity to build on an increasingly recognizable brand.
We retained the established NEXUS identity while exploring refreshed layouts, compositions, and visual treatments to give the 2025 materials their own personality.
The result was a continued sense of visual consistency without simply repeating the previous year’s designs.
By its third annual conference in October 2026, NEXUS had established itself as a highly anticipated event, with another sold-out gathering in New York City.
Our design approach continued to evolve alongside the conference.
Building on the visual language established in previous years, we introduced new creative refinements while preserving the familiar elements that connect all three conferences.
Three years in, the NEXUS brand demonstrates how a consistent identity can remain dynamic, engaging, and relevant through thoughtful creative evolution.
A successful conference brand isn’t limited to a logo or a single promotional graphic. It needs to work across an entire ecosystem of communications and experiences.
Since 2024, Sabra Creative has designed the event materials for each annual NEXUS Conference, ensuring that the visual identity remains consistent across the many ways attendees interact with the event.
From communications leading up to the conference to materials attendees encounter during the event itself, every design contributes to a larger, unified experience.
Our focus is on making those materials feel connected, intentional, and professional while allowing individual pieces to have their own visual impact.
The goal is more than visual consistency. It’s creating an experience that feels thoughtfully designed from beginning to end.
For organizations like ABGH, this consistency also helps reinforce credibility, strengthen event recognition, and create a lasting visual foundation that can support future growth.
While our work focuses on the visual experience, what makes NEXUS truly special is the community it brings together.
The conference addresses serious challenges facing Black women in healthcare, but it also makes room for celebration, restoration, and joy.
Its programming combines thought-provoking conversations about leadership, equity, and professional advancement with experiences designed to foster connection and personal well-being.
From inspiring speakers and mentorship opportunities to wellness programming, networking receptions, and shared cultural experiences, NEXUS recognizes that professional success and personal fulfillment are deeply connected.
And attendees have responded with extraordinary enthusiasm.
As Dr. Jennifer Christie, ABGH member and past president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, reflected:
“There was so much love and joy in the air. I feel blessed to have been a part of the experience.”
Another attendee, Rebecca Ekeanyanwu, described the experience as:
“Hands down the best conference I’ve ever been to this year. The energy? Unmatched. The speakers? Inspirational.”
These reactions speak to something that can’t be captured through event attendance numbers alone: the lasting impact of bringing people together in a space where they feel supported, valued, and inspired.
And it’s precisely this kind of impact that makes designing for mission-driven organizations so rewarding.
The evolution of NEXUS offers a valuable lesson for any organization planning a recurring conference or signature event.
A strong event brand should be recognizable enough to build loyalty and flexible enough to keep people excited about what’s next.
When organizations maintain a consistent visual identity across multiple years, they create opportunities to strengthen audience recognition, reinforce their mission, and make each new event feel like part of a larger story.
Refreshing the design thoughtfully from year to year helps maintain that sense of excitement without sacrificing the brand equity already established.
For NEXUS, this means each annual conference can introduce a new visual expression while remaining connected to the same powerful mission.
It’s an approach that works especially well for nonprofit organizations, professional associations, and mission-driven conferences looking to establish lasting signature events.
At Sabra Creative, we believe that great design has the power to strengthen organizations, amplify important messages, and bring people together.
Our ongoing partnership with ABGH and the NEXUS Conference is a reflection of that belief.
From developing the original brand in 2024 to evolving the event’s visual identity through 2025 and 2026, we’ve been proud to help shape the creative experience surrounding this extraordinary gathering.
We’re grateful to ABGH for trusting us with the creative vision for NEXUS and for the opportunity to support an initiative making a meaningful difference in the lives and careers of Black women in medicine.
Three years. Three sold-out conferences. One inspiring mission.
And a brand we’re proud to continue building.
